We are taught to use targeted keywords in page titles, headings, and meta descriptions; to also include keywords in the page copy and the alt tags of our images. We adhere to sound SEO principles, doing everything we can to increase our chances of landing on the first page of Google SERP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if I told you that sometimes none of this SEO stuff is really necessary? That you don\u2019t have to worry about optimizing your pages for search. Would you believe me? I selected one page in particular to discuss in this post: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedarville.edu\/help\/Excel-Repeat-Spreadsheet-Column-Headings-at-Top-of-Page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excel: Repeat Spreadsheet Column Headings at Top of Page<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This page briefly explains the steps necessary to repeat column headings at the top of the page of an Excel spreadsheet. (Full disclosure &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedarville.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our main website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been redesigned since this page was created, and none of the help pages were included in the redesign. You\u2019re probably thinking, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe has to be exaggerating. The SEO can\u2019t be that bad if the page was selected for a featured snippet.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Well, let\u2019s take a look.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Where We Went Wrong<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many examples of bad SEO on this page, which was created long before we were aware of what SEO was or the best practices surrounding it. Let&#8217;s look at the page title, meta description, and header tags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Title Tag<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The title tag is the most important part of a page to optimize because it&#8217;s the first thing a search visitor sees about your web page in the SERP. The optimal length of the title tag should be between 50-60 characters (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/learn\/seo\/title-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Any more than that and you have a good chance of it being truncated in search results. Our help page title comes in at a whopping 118 characters, almost twice the recommended length:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excel: Repeat Spreadsheet Column Headings at Top of Page &#8211; Help Pages &#8211; Information Technology &#8211; Cedarville University<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the screenshot shown above, Google displayed the first 64 characters of our title. Although long, the title does describe the page. A better title, based on current SEO principles, might be:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to repeat column headings at top of Excel spreadsheet<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new title:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">places keywords near the beginning (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeat column headings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clearly describes the content on the page<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is only 57 characters long<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reads like a natural sentence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>H1 Tag<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The H1 tag is the most important of the header tags. Its main purpose is to give the reader a strong sense of what the page is about. Here is the H1 tag from our help page:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excel: Repeat Spreadsheet Column Headings at Top of Page &#8211; Help Pages &#8211; Information Technology &#8211; Cedarville University<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This should look familiar because it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exactly the same as the page title<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Having the H1 tag match the page title is not a problem for SEO, but to me it\u2019s a missed opportunity. A slight difference between the two tags gives you a chance to include another of your targeted keywords (or a semantically related keyword).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no ideal length for the page header, try to make it only as long as it needs to be to accurately describe the page.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did I say H1 tag? I meant to say H1 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tags.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0This page has <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While multiple H1 tags are permitted, no one really thinks it\u2019s a good idea to have more than one. But that\u2019s not the worst of it. Not only are there three H1 tags, there are 3 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> H1 tags!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To see the H1 tags, you can right-click your mouse and select <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">View page source<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then search for \u201c&lt;H1&gt;\u201d. Or, if you\u2019re a Chrome user, you can install the very useful\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/seo-meta-in-1-click\/bjogjfinolnhfhkbipphpdlldadpnmhc?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEO META in 1 CLICK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extension. It takes the data from the &#8220;View page source&#8221; page and displays it in a nice tabbed format that is really easy to read. It doesn\u2019t directly influence page rank, but a good one will generate more clicks &#8211; which <em>will<\/em> affect page rank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what makes a good meta description? A meta description should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be as compelling and relevant as possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have targeted keywords at or near the beginning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be between 145-165 characters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include a CTA (if appropriate)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be unique for every page<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our meta description is 319 characters long (bad), contains no keywords (really bad), and has <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nothing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do with the content of the page (dreadful). This description was copied from an earlier version of our home page &#8211; and is repeated as the meta description on <em>all<\/em> of our help pages. (Yikes!)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>H2 Tags<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H2 tags (sub-headers) should accurately describe each section of the web page. Think of H2 tags as chapter titles in a book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first H2 tag of our help page is also identical to the H1 tags. Repeating the same phrase over and over (and over) kind of feels like keyword stuffing to me. (bad)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Summary of the Bad SEO<\/h2>\n<p>To recap the SEO worst practices that we used:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The title tag is too long. (truncation)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The title tag is the same as the H1 tag (missed opportunity)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meta description is way too long and has nothing to do with what\u2019s on the page. (misleading)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three identical H1 tags (wow!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The title tag is the same as the H1 tags <i>and<\/i> an H2 tag. Believe it or not, we actually did a few things that Google deemed important:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The content on the page definitively answers the query.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The steps necessary to \u201crepeat the column headings at the top of the page\u201d are in a numbered list. Pages that include lists are often used as featured snippets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The title and header tags accurately describe the page and include targeted keywords.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many other help pages on our site that also deal with Word and Excel are linked to this page.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During 2018, this help page had 237,000+ unique pageviews, and the average time spent on the page was over 8 minutes. A quote I read recently sums this up pretty well:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoogle only loves you when everyone else loves you first.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google concluded that our help page answered the query better than any other page. If you go back and look at the screenshot of the search results, you will see that the first result after the featured snippet and the \u201cPeople also ask\u201d section is a page from Microsoft support. Apparently our page answered the query better than the company that created the product. \u00af\\_(\u30c4)_\/\u00af<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I first saw how popular our help pages were, I had no idea I would be writing a blog post about them. But after I reviewed the metadata and saw how bad the SEO really was, I thought it was something worth sharing. This post illustrates that if the content of the page is valuable enough to Google, it has a chance to appear as a featured snippet, even when utilizing SEO <em>worst<\/em> practices.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Optimizing web pages for organic search is a key component of any SEO strategy.
